My Life Monday...

I am not smart enough to know how to add that cute little picture letting you all know I am joining in on the "my life Monday" bandwagon. But I thought it looked like fun to share a childhood memory.

Geesh, it has been a long time since I was a child. My memories are not as good as they once were. But, this story I am going to share I think will always be in my mind. I don't think my parents will ever let us forget it as long as they are living.

I think I was about 10 or so, and my sister was 11. That means I had a brother that was 12 and another brother that was 13. It also means I had younger brothers that were, 9,8,5,4,3,1,(and a couple more to still join our family)

So, my parents had gone somewhere, I don't really remember where. But they left us all home alone, with my two older brothers in charge. And my sister in charge of watching the bread that was baking in the oven. My Mom baked 10 loaves of bread at least once a week, sometimes twice a week. Because she did so much bread baking, she had a huge big barrel in the kitchen that was full of flour. I am guessing that it held at least 150lbs of flour.

It was July the middle of the summer and it had been several months since we had experienced snow. So, what do you do when there is no snow? You make your own. I am not sure who was the ringleader in this operation-snow-in-July, but I am sure one of my many brothers came up with the idea. It couldn't of been sweet innocent me I am sure of that.

What happened was that barrel of flour that was full, ended up empty. And it ended up all over the front lawn at our house. But not only on the lawn but all through the kitchen, and the living room as we scooped up handfuls and headed outside to throw the stuff in the air. It was better than snow, when it snowed you got all cold and couldn't stay outside too long. In July when you make your own snow, you can play in that stuff for hours.

Can you imagine the horror my parents experienced when they pulled into the driveway, and say the lawn covered in white? I can only imagine that they had to brace themselves everytime they left us home alone, to what they would find on their return.

I have to say that I have never seen my Dad so mad. Not only about the huge mess he had to deal with, but the loss of all that flour. He worked hard to support our large family.

You know that saying, "what goes around comes around"? My Dad reminded me of that saying one morning when I called to tell them the mess I woke up to. Two of my little darlings woke up in the middle of the night once, and emptied out the entire fridge out on the back lawn. I have never seen such a mess since the flour incident. When my Dad asked them what they were doing, they told him with a twinkle in their eyes, "we were cracking the eggs" I don't know how he could find so much humor in that. I myself was not laughing...Just as he did not think our snow in July was too funny either.

Today years later, we both can think about these experiences and laugh.
I so wish I had taken pictures of the snow in July and the empty fridge.

rofl, we had a flour party at my house as well. We weren't smart enough to say we wanted snow, but it was fun anyway ;)

Great story! We never played with the flour, but my husband used to light it on fire with his siblings. Good thing you didn't discover your "snow" was flammable!

Oh, man. I'm just trying to picture it and I think I'd be a little over the top about it, too! LOL! By the way, just how many kids were in your family?! Wow!

Jane, those are hillarious! We once got into the 50 lb bag of wheat under my mom's bed and spread it through the house. It was impossible to vacuum it all up. They finally ripped out the carpet in the bathroom when the seam along the bathtub started to sprout. I guess 5 little girls splashing supplied plenty of water.

Ok that is hilarious! We got all the fresh fruit my mom bought once and had a "see how far you can throw it" on our driveway one summer. My mom was not amused.
